In the northern Angolan city of Uige, 17 were pronounced dead and 61 people were injured in a match between Santa Rita and Recreativo do Libolo.
Tragedy struck in the seventh minute of the match, when a group of supporters were trying to enter the stadium, producing a domino effect and leaving many supporters trapped underneath it all.
Of the 61 injured, seven are said to be in critical condition.
According to medical officials, victims showed signs of suffocation due to the large number of people trampling on top of them.
The stadium itself can hold roughly 8,000, an amount that had been reached by kick-off.
It is reported that those attempting to enter the stadium would have brought the grounds over its capacity.
