Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid have always been characterised by their sturdy, hard to penentrate defence, but their defensive pillars Diego Godin and Filipe Luis have always been capable of joining in on the attack.They have caught opponents- and some of their own teammates even- by surprise with this attacking output.
Diego Godin got things started against Sevilla, with Filipe Luis adding in a goal against Malaga and Real Sociedad. Neither have forgotten their defensive duties however, as instead this serves as another layer to their game, not something that compensates for any weaknesses at the back.
The goals have proved crucial for Atleti as well, as the Brazilian left-back's was the sole strike vs. the Txuriurdin, whereas Godin's was the opener against Jorge Sampaoli's side.
The Uruguayan centre-back has 22 goals since joining in 2010, whereas Luis has eight in all competitions.
If Atletico want to emerge victorious from the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, the defensive duo might have to do more than just put in a shift at the back in order to boost their side's chances of victory.
