Curiously, a few weeks ago, the signing of Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt seemed much closer for Barcelona than the signing of De Jong. It was even leaked that the club met with him to convince him to sign. The reality is that the meeting didn't go as well as hoped. De Ligt's excited by Barça's interest, but he will study other offers.
The main problem is Barça cannot guarantee him a regular spot in the team. In addition, their economic offer is below what's on the table elsewhere.
