Curiously, a few weeks ago, the signing of Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt seemed much closer for Barcelona than the signing of De Jong. It was even leaked that the club met with him to convince him to sign. The reality is that the meeting didn't go as well as hoped. De Ligt's excited by Barça's interest, but he will study other offers.
The main problem is Barça cannot guarantee him a regular spot in the team. In addition, their economic offer is below what's on the table elsewhere. Juventus are in the most advanced position at the moment to make the signing, which could cost 80 million euros. The Italians believe it's almost done.
Juve are ready to pay the price, a figute which seems out of Barça's reach if they move for Frenkie de Jong. The age of the Serie A side's defenders (Chiellini, Bonucci and Barzagli) mean De Ligt will fit straight into the club's plans as they look to rejuvenate their backline.
