Italian Seire A giants Juventus were many people's favourites to win the Champions League but they were in serious danger of being knocked out at the last 16 stage. The Italian club were given a nightmare draw as they were paired to play Atletico Madrid in the first knock-out round. Diego Simeone's side are known for being one of the most defensively efficient teams in football and that was on show in the first leg.
Max Allegri's side were beaten 2-0 in Madrid, with late goals from Jose Maria Gimenez and Diego Godin giving the Spaniards the edge going into the second leg in Turin. Juventus desperately needed someone to step up and, like he always does, Cristiano Ronaldo was that man. He towered over Juanfran to give Juventus the lead in the 27th minute.
Ronaldo then made it a duo of headers in the second-half. The Portuguese superstar met Joao Cancelo’s cross and powered a header towards goal. It looked as if Jan Oblak had produced a wonder save as he clawed the ball away, but goal-line technology showed that the ball had just gone over the line.
Ronaldo’s aerial prowess has always been one of his best attributes. And his double on Tuesday night led to Barcelona legend Gary Lineker heaping praise on the former Real Madrid talisman on his twitter official page saying he is the best header of a football he’s ever seen.
You will struggle to find someone that is or has been a better header of the football than Ronaldo, to be honest. Ronaldo then scored the winner with five minutes to go. Juventus were given a penalty when Federico Bernadeschi was felled in the box. Ronaldo stepped up and he powered his spot-kick past Oblak, sealing a remarkable comeback.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo has been described as a ‘living football God’ by his old Manchester United team-mate Rio Ferdinand who is now a football pundit. The Portugal international had a memorable night for Juve this evening as his hat trick secured a 3-0 win over Atletico Madrid, sending the Serie A giants through 3-2 on aggregate.
Ronaldo always seems to produce in the Champions League and Ferdinand was absolutely loving what he saw from his old colleague in this game. Watch the video clip above as the former Man Utd defender absolutely waxes lyrical about Ronaldo on BT Sport.
The tweet reads: "He's a living football God!" "He's the best header of the ball I've ever seen." The Champions League is Cristiano Ronaldo's playground "
