Barcelona star set to return against Real Madrid after two years

9 months ago  Raphael   Sport News

Many doubts surround Barcelona's starting line-up for the Copa del ReyClasico but what's certain is that Marc-Andre ter Stegen will start due to the loss of Jasper Cillessen to injury. The German will play in the Copa for the first time since January 2017, when Barcelona took on Athletic Club at San Mames. Since then, the Champions League and LaLiga Santander have been his, but the Copa is for the Dutchman.
Madrid will be far from pleased to see Ter Stegen in goal, yet the German has a mixed record against Los Blancos as he has two defeats, two draws and three wins from seven appearances in this fixture. In LaLiga Santander he has never lost, though Barcelona were defeated twice in the 2017 Spanish Super Cup, losing 3-1 at the Camp Nou and 2-0 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. This Wednesday he will debut against Madrid in the Copa, with both teams coming into the game with ambitions of the treble and in good form.
Meawhile, neither Leo Messi nor Ousmane Dembele took part in Barcelona training on Monday as attention turns to El Clasico. Uncertainty remains over whether they will be fit enough to feature in that game, although the Argentine's absence was planned. After being forced off early against Valencia on Saturday, Messi was rested on Monday but could return to training as early as Tuesday. The session prior to the game will determine if he is fit enough to take part against Real Madrid and only then will Ernesto Valverde make a decision.
However, the situation with Dembele is a little more complicated and, although he was present at Barcelona's training ground on Monday, he did not join the group session. Dembele suffered a sprain in the game against Leganes and hasn't trained for two weeks, while he also suffered a fever over the weekend.
