Sergio Busquets has renewed his contract with FC Barcelona until 2023. The defensive midfielder, who is currently playing his tenth season in the club's first team will remain at the club until he is 35 based on his new contract's terms.
The team announced that his release clause has jumped from €200 million to €500 million in an effort to ensure he remains and retires at the club. The second captain of the first team, Busquets has played 490 games for the Blaugrana. He has scored 13 goals in that time.
The buyout clause should ensure that they receive no unwanted interest in a prized asset that they have no intention of parting with.
The Liga giants have moved to put a new deal in place after seeing Busquets start to generate transfer talk. Despite his strong ties to the club, the World Cup winner had seen a possible move to England mooted.
A reunion with former Barca boss Pep Guardiola at Manchester City was reported to be a possibility, with the Premier League champions prepared to spend big on a proven performer. Such speculation has now been brought to a close.
Barca have displayed their commitment to a home-grown talent by renewing his deal once again.
During the last decade, he has won 28 titles, seven leagues, six Copa del Reys, three Champions Leagues, three Club World Cups, three European Super Cups, and six Spanish Super Cups. His previous contract was set to expire in 2021.
He will also be hoping to add to his enviable haul of major honours in the years to come. Sergio Busquets also helped Spain to World Cup glory in 2010 and a second European Championship triumph in 2012.
Meanwhile, Barcelona poor form continues as they lost against Madrid side Leganes in a midweek Laliga Santander on Wednesday. The Blaugrana lost 2-1 in Madrid against the bottom of the table side Leganes after a below-par performance from the Catalan side.
