Barcelona’s Champions League problem revealed

1 month ago  Raphael   Sport News

Barcelona are up against Tottenham in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday in a Group B encounter as they hope to take home all three points in their second game of the competition after beating PSV Eindhoven on matchday one at Camp Nou.
The Blaugrana’s put four goals past the Eredivisie champions with Lionel Messi scoring a hattrick as Ousmane Dembele added but their number 9 Luis Suarez was unable to get a goal for himself.
One key reason for Barcelona’s lack of Champions League success in recent years is Luis Suarez’s poor form in front of goal, as the Uruguayan has failed to register away from the Camp Nou in Europe since September 16 2015. That represents more than three years and Suarez’s recent figures are nothing compared to his first couple of seasons with the Catalan side.
His last away goal in Europe’s elite competition came against Roma in a 1-1 draw.
That lack of firepower in front of goal is why Barcelona rely so heavily on Lionel Messi and it’s unthinkable that a Blaugrana No.9 could go so long without finding the back of the net.
Although Ernesto Valverde said in his press conference that Suarez’s lack of goals doesn’t bother him because he offers so much more to the team, it’s obvious that the Catalans are missing his contributions in the final third.
In fact, the Uruguayan’s role in the 2015 Champions League was crucial, scoring important goals away at Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain. Barcelona needs that Luis Suarez to return.
