In the history of Spanish giants Real Madrid there have been a lot of players putting on the number 9 jersey with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Ronaldo de Lima also gifted the honour to do so, but the Frenchman first donned the mythical number on his back in the famous white kit on August 29, 2010 and in 2018, he still wears it with pride. There are Real Madrid fans who are children who have only ever seen one '9' at the club: Karim Benzema.
He has resisted the pressures and demands to carry such a heavy number on his back at a club like Real Madrid. But Karim has been able to withstand all of that, having already owned the No. 9 for 3,007 days. That is more than any of the previous players so far this century.
Since January 1, 2000, Benzema is the longest-serving No. 9 at Los Blancos, having played the most games and scored the most goals with that number. Karim is the No. 9 of the century at Real Madrid. Madrid entered the new century with Fernando Morientes wearing the jersey in the 1999/00 season, having just inherited it from Davor Suker, a striker who held it for three seasons.
Since January 1, 2000, Morientes played 141 games and scored 46 goals wearing that number. In his last season at the club, he kept the jersey despite the arrival of Galactico superstar Ronaldo, who played with the No. 11 during his season at the club.
In the 2003/04 campaign, Morientes wore the No. 9 on the first day of the season against Betis but before the transfer window closed, he was sold to Monaco and the number went to Ronaldo, who held it until his January 2007 move to AC Milan.
The No. 9 adorned the Brazilian for 130 games, during which time he scored 72 goals. After his departure, the number would remain vacant until the following season. The heir came from within the club in the form of Roberto Soldado, with the youth product wearing it during eight games and failing to score any goals.
At the end of the campaign he left and the number fell into the hands of Argentine forward Javier Saviola. He was another who was more accustomed to being a substitute and wore the jersey for just 14 games and scored two goals.
In 2006/07, Madrid had signed Ruud Van Nistelrooy but when he arrived, the main numbers were taken (the 9 by Ronaldo and the 10 by Robinho) and he opted for the No. 17 instead.
It wouldn't be the last time it was worn by a Ronaldo as in the summer of 2009, Cristiano Ronaldo was forced into taking as his preferred 7 was worn by club legend Raul.
In 2009/10, Ronaldo played 35 games and scored 33 goals, until the Real captain left and ceded the No.7 to the Portuguese superstar.
Benzema was also at the club at that time and took the No. 11 during his first year in the Spanish capital. In his second season, the Frenchman took the No. 9 and there was no debate with Gonzalo Higuain, who preferred to continue with the 20 that he already had.
The No. 9 has been owned solely by Benzema since then, a time that corresponds to an era in modern footballing terms. With the nine on his back, Benzema has scored 193 goals in 397 games, more than anyone else since 2000. That is because Benzema is the No. 9 of the century in Madrid.
