Former Bafana Bafana international Bradley Carnell has been named as assistant coach at Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls, the club confirmed on Tuesday. Carnell left his post as Orlando Pirates assistant with the arrival of Kjell Jonevret last month, and has now won a position under Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch. “Bradley brings a tremendous amount of experience from his time playing at high levels in Germany and with his national team,” Marsch said. “We look forward to him bringing that perspective to our staff and helping us prepare our team each week.”   

Carnell is delighted with the move and tweeted: “Can't wait to join my new soccer family @NewYorkRedBulls. Thanks to my wife and family for all the support. See you soon stateside.” Carnell’s professional career started in 1993 with Wits University (now Bidvest Wits), before he won a move to Kaizer Chiefs. The defender spent the majority of his career in Germany, with VfB Stuttgart, Borussia Monchengladbach, Karlsruher SC and Hansa Rostock before finishing his playing days back in South Africa with SuperSport United. He also played all three games at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, part of 42 caps for the national side.
