In somewhat controversial fashion, David Villa was awarded the 2016 Major League Soccer MVP on Tuesday.
The two players beside Villa nominated for the MVP, also known as the Landon Donovan award, were Bradley Wright Phillips and Sacha Kleijsten, both of NYC FC rivals New York Red Bulls.
The 35-year-old Spaniard led the skyblues to their first ever MLS Playoffs and was happy for the chance to shine in his second season for his current club.
"I'm very grateful for this award and to represent NYC FC," the striker said. "This is an important day because this is one of the achievements I had laid out for myself when I first joined the MLS two seasons ago."
