Croatia captain Luka Modric has set the world cup ablaze with blistering performances in Russia.

The Real Madrid midfielder scored a wonderful long range strike against Argentina in which they won 3-0, he also scored from the spot in their opening game against Nigeria, making two goals to his name and also getting to win the Man of the match (MOTM) in both games.

Modric’s teammate Dejan Lovren says his fellow countryman his the best midfielder in the world and he believes if the Los Blancos midfielder was Spanish or German he'd be competing for the Ballon d'Or.

"If he played for Germany or Spain, he would perhaps be chosen for the Ballon d'Or “Lovren explained in his pre-match press conference.

"He's the best midfielder in the world. "There is a different atmosphere to four years ago in Brazil, now we feel we can go far, we're all mature and we have confidence."
