Dele Alli missing in England Squad for UEFA Nation League

1 month ago  Raphael   Sport News

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli has miss out in Gareth Southgate squad to face Spain in the UEFA Nation League. Jadon Sancho, Mason Mount and James Maddison have received their first England call-ups for this month's Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain.
Maddison, 21, has also been rewarded for a series of influential displays with Leicester City, although Daniel Sturridge has been overlooked despite finding form for Liverpool.
Maddison has created more goalscoring chances than any other English player in the Premier League this season.
Gareth Southgate announced a youthful 25-man squad on Thursday shortly after confirming the extension of his contract through to the 2022 World Cup.
Watford midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah and goalkeepers Alex McCarthy and Marcus Bettinelli are the other uncapped players included, while Ross Barkley has been recalled at the expense of Chelsea team-mate Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Much anticipation surrounded the potential promotion of teenagers Sancho and Mount following their fine starts to the season at Borussia Dortmund and Derby County respectively.
Mount has been directly involved in 17 goals in his past 18 league appearances across the Dutch Eredivisie and the Championship, including play-off games (10 goals and seven assists) while Sancho's five Bundesliga assists are more than any other player in Europe's big five leagues this season, and he has set up a team-mate once every 25 minutes on average in the Bundesliga.
Dele Alli, Fabian Delph, Jesse Lingard and Adam Lallana all miss the two Nations League fixtures through injury.
Gareth Southgate had this to say about his decision : "Jadon's is an unusual story for a young English player. He's been brave enough to go abroad and play," added Southgate.
"He's started two Champions League games for Dortmund and he's had a really big impact from the bench in their league matches, so that's been a really brave decision from him to go and seek his opportunity.
"Mason's is a slightly different situation. He had a year at [Dutch side] Vitesse Arnhem last year so he's had another year of men's football. This year in the Championship he's created more chances than any other player in the league.
"They're both still at formative stages but we think they can have an impact with the group and we'd have no hesitation in playing them in the games."
England visit World Cup finalists Croatia on October 12 before travelling to Spain three days later.
