After six years of service with the Senegalese national team, Espanyol's Papakouli Diop has announced through his social networks that he is retiring from the international scene after six years.
The player has cited personal reasons as the motivation behind his decision.
"After six years defending the national team's jersey with pride and honour, my time has come to an end," he said.
"It's the toughest decision I've ever made in my professional career, but for personal reasons I think it is better to stop now.
"I thank my family, friends, colleagues and the Senegalese people for their support and wish good luck to the lions in their upcoming challenges."
Espanyol's captain, Javi Lopez, was quick to show his support after the announcement.
"A difficult decision for a great professional, but we will continue working together because you still have a lot of football left in you," he said.
