Roma overtook Napoli to return to second place in Serie A after coming back from an early deficit against Sassuolo at the Stadio Olimpico in Sunday's late evening game.
After Gregoire Defrel's opener for the strugglers the Lupi hit back through Leandro Paredes and Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah to lead at the break, with Edin Dzeko putting the result beyond doubt with a goal midway through the second period after coming off the bench.
Dzeko's goal took him past the 30 goal mark in all competitions for only the second time in his career.
Napoli's 3-2 lunchtime win over Empoli had temporarily moved the southerners into the automatic Champions League berth.
Roma still trail Juventus by some eight points following the champions slender victory at Sampdoria earlier in the day.
