Yesterday’s game between Egypt and Saudi Arabia in the final Group A game saw the Egyptian goalie Essam El Hadary became the oldest player in World Cup history.
El Hadary started the Group A game at the Volgograd Arena at the age of 45 years and 161 days, which shows that he has surpassed the record set by Colombia veteran goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon in Brazil 2014, who was 43 years and 3 days old in his final appearance.
Though his team lost the game 2-1, but El Hadary showed class in the first half of the game by saving a penalty.
The Veteran goalkeeper made his debut in 1996; even Ramadan Sobhi who is the youngest Egyptian in their world cup squad was not even born by then. Since his debut El Hadary has won the African nations cup with Egypt four times including their three consecutive victories from 2006 to 2010.
El Hadary had described the possibility of playing as "not only being my achievement but also an achievement for Egypt” after being left out of the starting line up in the opening two games.
El Hadaray did not finish victorious, however, as Salman Alfaraj - with another penalty - levelled Mohamed Salah's opener and Salem Aldawsari struck an injury-time winner.
