Scott McTominay could miss four weeks of action for Manchester United after suffering an ankle injury against Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon. The midfielder was subbed off, and was already an injury doubt for that game after he injured his foot against Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League tie between the two sides.
However, McTominay has had an initial scan which suggests he has a problem which could rule him out against both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City, with the top four not yet entirely out of reach.
After the game, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer speculated that with the kind of injury he’d suffered, the 22-year-old midfielder could be out of action for up to two months, saying: “He went over on his ankle. It’s a painful one. I’ve had one and I was out for eight weeks. But then again sometimes you’re back in two weeks, so I don’t know. It looked painful and he’s not one for rolling around.”
There is a chance that the prognosis could change by the end of the week, though. McTominay will have a further scan once the swelling has reduced on his ankle, and that might present a different picture, meaning that Solskjaer’s optimistic guess of a couple of weeks might ultimately be correct.
An injury to McTominay would mean that Paul Pogba’s return from his own lack of fitness would be vital with two key matches coming out, and it might see United field some reserve midfielders such as James Garner and Juan Mata in the Europa League match against Astana following the international break. Fellow midfielder Fred has started to show signs of improvement which would go some way to mitigate McTominay’s absence, but Nemanja Matic may be recalled to the starting line-up.
