Fabinho's remarkable rise from Real Madrid hopeful to Monaco hero

Unorthodox paths to the top are nothing new but Fabinho has taken a particularly subversive route to his current position, as part of Monaco's Champions League quarter-final team.
The defender has bagged 10 goals from right-back this season, including three in Europe, while cementing himself as a first-team regular in Leandro Jardim's young side.
However it was Portuguese outfit Rio Ave who first plumped for the Brazilian when he was an academy player at Fluminense, signing a six-year contract at the Norte club although never playing a game for them.
Real Madrid's interest in Fabinho saw leave on loan after just a month, staying for a single season in the Spanish capital and making one first-team appearance under Jose Mourinho as he generally stuck to the Castilla side.
A two-year loan at Monaco followed the season after, making the move permanent in 2015 and going on to instil himself in one of Europe's most exciting teams.
