Old rivals Mayo and Dublin will meet in the All-Ireland Football Final in Croke Park this afternoon. Dublin are the current title holders, while Mayo have not won the Sam Maguire since 1951, despite reaching the final seven times since then. Throw-in at Croke Park is at 3.30pm. Galway and Kerry will go head-to-head in the Minor final at a 1.15pm. Motorists are being reminded that road closures will be in place around the stadium this afternoon. The minor and senior football matches will be shown live on a big screen in Smithfield Square in Dublin.
The Dublin City Council event starts at 12.30pm this afternoon, with a special screening of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in memory of Gene Wilder who recently passed away. The event is family-friendly and no alcohol is permitted. Lord Mayor of Dublin Brendan Carr, says he thinks the boys in blue will be taking the Sam Maguire cup home again this year. “Dublin are an absolutely fabulous team this year, they’ve been brilliant all year and I haven’t seen anyone that’s going to challenge them whatsoever, “I can’t believe Mayo, despite their greatest efforts – and it should be a good game – but I can’t see Dublin relinquishing that cup this year. “And hopefully we’ll have it for another year or two yet.”
Cllr Michael Loftus, the Cathaoirleach of the Ballina Municipal District on Mayo County Council, is cautiously optimistic about his team’s chances. His father Micky Loftus was a substitute on the All-Ireland winning Mayo team in 1951, and has attended every All-Ireland Football final in Croke Park since then. Cllr Loftus says he and his father are afraid to get their hopes too high about today's match. “Well, we don’t want to get them too high but unfortunately that’s what we will do,” he said. “I know my father gets very excited at a game. “It’s so hard to put words on it, we’re going up to the game, hoping we’re going to win, ad looking forward to winning, but apprehensive.”
