Germany center back Antonio Rudiger is finally back in training for Chelsea ahead of their Champions League match with Juventus on Wednesday. The former Roma defender underwent surgery near the start of this month on a pelvic problem. His one game this season was in mid-September at Wolves when he was forced off at half-time.
Callum Hudson-Odoi missed the trip to Manchester City at the weekend having returned from England international duty with a hamstring concern and unlike Rudiger, he was not one of the players who entered the training pitch for the start of Tuesday’s squad session.
England midfielder Ross Barkley however trained with the team and is contention for a place on the bench. Chelsea lost in the first leg against the Spaniards but victory in the second leg could see the Blues qualify to the knockout stages.
Frank Lampard’s team has recovered from a slow start to the season and sits fourth in the English Premier League table. Chelsea narrowly lost to defending champions Manchester City 2-1 on Saturday at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
Ahead of the match, Chelsea captain Ceaser Azpilicueta insisted that the match is a must-win affair.
“It is a must-win. We have a great chance to qualify for the next stage and it is like a final because we can get that,” Azpilicueta said.
“We play against a good side. They beat us at the Bridge in the first game, and we have to recover from this and be ready for that game. It is a final. Every game is important and the mindset is to win.” He continued.
Chelsea won the Champions League for the first time in their history back in 2012, beating Bayern Munich in the final.
