Gremio competing against Real Madrid for Club World Cup crown

7 months from now  Raphael   Sport News

A comprehensive 3-1 aggregate victory in the Copa Libertadores final has seen Gremio qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup, joining the likes of Real Madrid, Auckland City, Al Jazira, Urawa Reds, Pachuca and Wydad Clasablanca in their bid for world supremacy.
The Porto Alegre side will commence their campaign in the semi-final stage of the competition on December 12 at the Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain City, where they will meet the winners of the quarterfinal clash between Mexican side Pachuca and Moroccan outfit Wydad Athletic.
In the competition's previous instalments, only two South American teams have claimed the crown with Corinthians prevailing back in 2000 and more recently in 2012, whilst Sao Paolo managed back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006.
Gremio, who secured their third Copa Libertadores title, have previously experienced success on the world stage too, winning the 1983 Intercontinental Cup against Hamburg 2-1 then losing to Ajax in a penalty shootout in 1995.
Meanwhile, Lanus' defeat means the Argentines will have to wait for another attempt at the intercontinental title after Boca Juniors, who lost in the 2007 final against Milan; San Lorenzo, who lost to Real Madrid in 2014; and River Plate, who were beaten by Barcelona in 2015, all missed out on the silverware.
