Atletico Madrid and France attacker Antoine Griezmann scored a goal that puts him on the record books of the UEFA Champions League alongside ex-Super Eagles Striker Daniel Amokachi, The Frenchman's strike for Atlético Madrid against Club Brugge was the 8,000th goal in UEFA Champions League history – qualifying excluded.
There had been 7,912 goals scored when this season's group stage kicked off, with a further 45 racked up on matchday one, and 23 more added to the total on the Tuesday of matchday two. The 20th goal of Wednesday, therefore – Griezmann putting Atlético 2-1 up 67 minutes in against Club Brugge – was a landmark effort.
Goal number 8,000 comes almost 26 years since the very first – scored by Daniel Amokachi in a 1-0 win for, coincidentally, Club Brugge against CSKA Moskva on 25 November 1992.
With fewer games played then than there are now, it took over six years for the 1,000th goal to arrive, and nearly three more for that tally to double. Ángel Di María scored the 7,000th in 2015, exactly 23 years to the day since the first.
