Despite going into Wednesday’s second leg round of 16 UEFA Champions League clash against Swiss club Basel with a comfortable lead, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has warned that they will not treat the reverse fixture lightly.

City go into the second leg on the back of a 4-0 advantage from their first meeting in Switzerland on February 13.

A brace from Ilkay Gundogan and a goal each from Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero secured the impressive first-leg win.

Speaking at Tuesday’s press conference ahead of the clash against Basel, Guardiola said: “We must be focused at not make any mistakes against Basel, it’s a Champions League game and the Champions League is something special. In football, anything is possible but we have to be calm and focused on what we have to do.”

Guardiola revealed some good news regarding injury absentee Benjamin Mendy, who has been out for months.

“He (Mendy) is back but after six months out we must be patient.”

Guardiola went on to comment on defender John Stone and young forward Phil Foden.

He said: “John is an extraordinary player. What he has done has shown me that. Now we have four excellent defenders. They all have to be ready and they all have to be prepared. There is no doubt about John’s ability to play in the team.”

“We are delighted to have Phil Foden with us but he is still 17 years old and he’s a young guy but of course we are so happy with him and we have a lot of confidence with him, but maybe he will play tomorrow. We will decide on the line-up tomorrow.”
