HISTORY MADE! Giroud steps ahead of Zizou in France history

2 months ago  Raphael   Sport News

Olivier Giroud volleyed in a wonderful winner for France as the World Cup champions overcame a spirited Netherlands side in their UEFA Nations League match.
The Frenchman’s 32nd international goal moved him ahead of Zinedine Zidane on Les Bleus’ all-time scorer list, into fourth place, two goals behind David Trezeguet.
The Chelsea striker was criticised for failing to register a single shot on target during the 2018 World Cup, but manager Didier Deschamps praised Giroud for his all round game.
“I am very happy for Olivier Giroud,” the head coach said. “He’s very helpful for us and he’s given us the win. He’s often unjustly criticised. “He’s very important to the team. We need him.”
Olivier Giroud’s strike ended a ten-game goal drought for France and he will look to increase his tally in October for his country’s next set of games against Iceland and Germany. Out of the 32 goals Giroud has scored, only four have been scored in tournaments for France, one in the 2014 World Cup and three in Euro 2016.
Zinedine Zidane scored twice to help the side win the 1998 World Cup final then added another three in the 2006 World Cup, including one in the final, to bring his tournament tally to five.
Olivier Giroud will need to do more on the big stage to go down as a French legend in the future. He will be looking for more tournament success in the 2019 UEFA Nations League finals and Euro 2020.
