Hlompho Kekana feels Mamelodi Sundowns have an edge in title race after Ajax scalp

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Hlompho Kekana insists they don’t mind winning ugly, and feels Tuesday’s victory over Ajax Cape Town gives them “an edge” in the league title race. Second-half goals from Percy Tau and Themba Zwane sent Ajax packing and took the Brazilians second in the standings, two points adrift of Cape Town City after the Citizens' win over Kaizer Chiefs, although Pitso Mosimane’s men have two games in hand. And while it may not have been all smooth sailing for Sundowns in Tshwane this week, man of the match Kekana, who cracked the bar with an unbelievable 40-yard piledriver during the game, was nevertheless thrilled to get the three points in the bag.

“It wasn’t one of our prettiest games but we knew that we had to grind this result and that’s what we did,” he told SuperSport after the game. “That was one of our goals: we said at the beginning of the season that we really need to make sure we win every match we play. “It’s never an easy task; there are challenges that we face but we are up for the task and I’m happy with the boys. They came here and made sure that we got the points. “We needed to be mentally strong because obviously we have seen the bad pitches in Africa before and this was the perfect one, to be honest, and we made sure we stuck to the game plan which is to make sure that we keep possession more because Ajax are stubborn. “The three points is important for us, to keep fighting, to be there with the top boys and I think with these three points… I think it gives us an edge to say ‘we can do it’.”
