Kepa pays his £71m release clause ahead of Chelsea move

Spain international Kepa Arrizabalaga, is set to join Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao after personally paying his own release clause to La liga.

The deal is worth £71m and will in turn break world record of £66.8m set by Liverpool when they got the services of Alisson Becker from AS Roma this summer.

The Spaniard joins the London club as replacement to Thibaut Courtois who wants out of the Bridge having being linked with a move to Real Madrid all through the summer.

According to BBC football, in Spain a player must buy himself out of his contract. This is usually done by depositing the amount of the buyout clause with La Liga - Spain's equivalent of the Premier League - to release the player from his contract.

The league then passes the money to the selling club. Kepa was close to joining Real Madrid in January but the deal fell through and he renewed his contract at the San Mames.

He has spent the past two seasons in Bilbao's first team, making 53 La Liga appearances.
