Recently, the Argentine forward was crowned the FIFA best men's player after surviving a stiff competition from Portuguese and Liverpool centre-back van Dijk who previously won the UEFA best player gong in August 2019.
The decision led to displeasure in football with Cristiano Ronaldo's mum recently linking "football mafia" factor as the reason behind her son not winning more individual awards. With eyes fixed on the football award slated for December 2, the Argentine forward has also been tipped as favourite winner for the sixth time.
The 32-year-old has been favoured by history, with antecedents indicating that the winner of FIFA The Best gong is usually the favourite for the France Football's award. Lucas Modric remains the only player to have clinched that trophy outside the duo of Messi and Ronaldo in the last decade. The Croatian midfielder was the overall outstanding player during World Cup 2018 in Russia, the same year he won Champions League trophy with Real Madrid.
