Lothar Matthaus took aim at Ozil

Germany legend Lothar Matthaus took aim at Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil after their loss to Mexico in their opening game in Russia.

Ozil have been criticised recently for posing in a photo with the controversial president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, with teammate Ilkay Gundogan also appearing in the picture with him.

Lothar Matthaus has a column on Bild newspaper and in his column, the German legend doesn’t care about his root but he only has problems with attitude after Germany’s national anthem was rendered.

"I insist: I do not have any problem with Ozil not singing the anthem, that's something that depends on each player, whether he has German, Turkish or African roots," Matthaus wrote. "But what I saw after the anthem in Moscow made me very angry: 10 German players greeted the fans in the stands and only Ozil did not."

However, Lothar Matthaus was only warming up at the point and proceeded to savage the Arsenal playmaker.

"Ozil doesn't understand why there are so many discussions in Germany about him, he doesn't understand what people in Germany expect from a national team player," he continued. "His body language is negative and he plays without joy, I often have the feeling that he doesn't feel comfortable in the German team's shirt, as if he doesn't want to play.

"There's no heart, no joy, no passion. After his latest performances, I wouldn't rule him out of retiring from international football after the World Cup."

Germany takes on Sweden in their next game which most fans are expecting a lot of changes from Joachim Low, but not sure if the world cup winning coach will wield his axe against Mesut.
