Amajita winger Luther Singh says he is relishing the chance to showcase his talents when the side head off to the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in South Korea. The Johannesburg-born midfielder was named in Thabo Senong’s final 21-man squad headed for Asia ahead of this month’s world junior spectacular after his impressive performances for Braga B and the South Africa U-20 squad. In fact, Singh has won the Golden Boot award in his last two tournaments for Amajita - the CAF U-20 African Nations Cup and COSAFA U-20 Championships - and that form has sparked plenty of confidence in the 19-year-old. “Taking on players, beating people one-versus-one and I have an eye for goal,” he said on SAFA’s official website. “I’m also very skilful, fast and intelligent.”

Singh also spoke of his enjoyment at playing in Portugal, which he says suits his style as a footballer. “Portugal is the place to be. The style of play suits me very well,” he said. “I’ve always grown up in the academy with the type of football that they play – keeping the ball on the ground, triangulation, changing the point of attack, limiting touches – and you can see it’s the kind of thing players do here without being told.” When asked about being selected for the final World Cup squad, Singh said: “It wasn’t something I planned for. But it was a dream come true. I’ve just kept telling myself that it came so soon because I have kept working and there will be many more should I continue at it.” “We’re going to have a good squad, boasting the best we have in South Africa. We’ll be fighting for the country.”

So confident is Singh that the playmaker believes Amajita have every chance of going deep in the U-20 World Cup, saying: “It’s not impossible. This is football. You make the best of the things you can control; the other things will fall in place. If it’s meant to be, it’ll happen.” Amajita play their first game of the U-20 World Cup against Japan on May 21 at the Suwon World Cup Stadium.
