MAMELODI SUNDOWS WERE HELD TO A GOALESS DRAW AT HOME BY POLOKWANE CITY

Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a 0-0 draw by Polokwane City in the Absa Premiership on Tuesday night as they missed a host of chances at Loftus Stadium. The draw means Sundowns move to 34 points from 17 games, four behind leaders Bidvest Wits, though they have played two games fewer. Polokwane were led by caretaker coach Phuti Mohafe following the resignation of Luc Eymael last week. Sundowns again rotated their squad with Kennedy Mweene in goal in the place of Wayne Sandilands, and the Algerian Fares Hachi in at leftback. Leonardo Castro kept his place up front, with Lucky Mohomi coming into the centre of the midfield along with captain Hlompho Kekana.

Sundowns dominated the chances but were wasteful in front of goal, with Percy Tau the biggest culprit as he missed three good chances. He first was a header, the second a scuffed shot inside the six-yard box and the third a simple finish that he struck straight at the goalkeeper. Sibusiso Vilakazi also had an excellent early chance but he could only pick out City goalkeeper George Chigova when a metre either side would have seen him open the scoring. City tried to hit Sundowns on the break and Walter Musona had their best chance, but saw his effort brilliantly saved by Mweene.

Sundowns are next in action in the second leg of their African Champions League tie away at KCCA of Uganda at the weekend, while City have to wait until April 1 for their next fixture, at home to Bloemfontein Celtic in what will be an early return for Eymael.
