Man Utd board counter Barcelona's ridiculous actions ahead of their Champions League encounter

8 months ago  Raphael   Sport News

Unhappy at what they perceive to be an opportunistic pricing structure from Barcelona, those in charge at Manchester United have come up with an initiative that will pass the extra cost of away tickets onto Barcelona fans for the upcoming Champions League tie between the two clubs. Barcelona set the price for away tickets at 102 pounds - 118 euros - yet supporters of the English club will only have to pay 75 pounds.
The Catalan giants, whose motto is ‘More than a Club’, are charging visiting supporters £102 per ticket for the second leg showdown. That figure is the most expensive single ticket price in United's history outside of a major European final. The move by the La Liga leaders has left United chiefs unhappy.
As such, the Red Devils have confirmed that they will charge Barcelona fans the same price for the first leg at Old Trafford, in order to subsidise United fans making the journey for the away leg. The club did similar in the group game with Valencia earlier this season and in last season’s knockout tie against Sevilla. The Red Devils introduced a subsidy that saw travelling supporters pay £54, the same price Liverpool fans paid on their visit to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.
A statement on the club's website announced tickets for the game will cost £102. However, the Red Devils will subsidise supporters £27 by charging Barcelona supporters the same price for the first leg at Old Trafford, which will bring prices down to £75.
During the Premier League match between Manchester United and West Ham United at Old Trafford on August 13, 2017 in Manchester, England.
A United statement labelled it a “difficult decision”. "Similarly to Valencia in the group stages and Sevilla away last season, we have again taken the difficult decision to charge Barcelona fans for the home leg at Old Trafford the same amount that Barcelona are charging for the away fixture," the club told their fans in a statement.
"In this instance we believe that our travelling supporters are again being subjected to increased/excessive ticket prices from the host club. ... We have again taken the difficult decision to charge FC Barcelona fans for the home leg at Old Trafford the same amount that FC Barcelona are charging for the away fixture (£102)."
"We will use the additional revenue gained from this to subsidise our travelling support by paying the 27 pound price difference for each of our travelling supporters."
Manchester United have been given 4,610 tickets. Unlike the Premier League, there are no fixed ticket prices for away fans in the Champions League.
Barcelona will be big favourites to progress against Manchester United. Ernesto Valverde's side demolished Lyon 5-1 in the last round, while the Red Devils produced a stirring comeback to beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 on aggregate.
