Swaziland is still in awe after Mbabane Swallows rewrote history books on Saturday afternoon by knocking AC Leopards out of the CAF Confederation Cup to become the first Swazi side to reach the group stages of any CAF sanctioned tournament. ‘AC Leopards gone in 60 minutes in Birds Furnace!’ wrote Times of Swaziland sports editor Lwazi Dlamini after Swallows, aptly nicknamed the Birds, came from 2-0 down on the day to win 4-2 (4-3 on aggregate). ‘Magical Birds make the nation proud,’ headlined the Swazi Observer before going on to label Swallows as the ‘toast of the nation.’ Swallows, already crowned Swazi Premier League Champions, had it all to do when, already 1-0 down from the first leg, went 2-0 down to Leopards in the first half. It seemed a mountain to climb but the Birds never gave up and scored four goals to propel themselves to the last 16 of the Confed Cup. It is another step in the right direction for the Swazis who saw their national team, Sihlangu record its best finish at last year’s Cosafa Cup, finishing in third place. Sihlangu also did well in the 2017 AFCON qualifiers, coming second in their group to Zimbabwe and avoiding defeat in all their home matches.
