Messi eases Barcelona into the quarter-finals

8 months ago  Raphael   Sport News

There was no need for a dramatic stoppage time comeback this year as Barcelona booked their ticket to the Champions League quarter-finals with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Chelsea.

Having drawn the first leg 1-1, the Catalan club already held a slight advantage due to the away goals rule, but Lionel Messi made sure there was clear daylight between the two teams by scoring the opener after just 128 seconds, slotting the ball between Thibaut Courtois' legs from a tight angle.

It was Messi who orchestrated the second goal too; although he didn't score it, this was perhaps his most impressive moment of the evening.

The No.10 pinched the ball from former La Masia classmate Cesc Fabregas before Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta quickly became victims number two and three.

Next, he sprayed a pass over to Ousmane Dembele, who was arriving in the box and who, after setting himself, struck the ball so powerfully towards the top corner that Courtois' hand couldn't stop it.

Chelsea, though, didn't let their heads drop and they knew that just two goals would still turn this tie around.

On the stroke of half-time they won a free-kick in a dangerous area and looked to pull one of the goals back, but Marcos Alonso's spinning effort bounced wide off the wrong side of the post.

The Blues were then livid not to be awarded a penalty at the very beginning of the second half when Alonso went down under pressure from Gerard Pique, although MARCA's refereeing expert Andujar Oliver agreed with the decision to wave play on.

At the other end, Barcelona then scored the third in the 63rd minute to really kill the tie, and it was just as well given that Andres Iniesta had gone off and been joined on the bench shortly afterwards by the injured Sergio Busquets.

As in the third minute, again it was Messi putting the ball in the net and again he did so by spotting a space between Courtois' starfish legs.

That led to a calm final half an hour, with Barcelona content and able to keep the ball and to pull Chelsea this way, that way, forwards and backwards and out at the last 16.
