Sone Aluko missed a penalty at the death as Queens Park Rangers won 2-1 away at their West London rivals Fulham in the Championship. The Nigeria forward had a chance to rescue a point for the Cottagers at the death after Idrissa Sylla had hit an 87th-minute strike following earlier goals from Conor Washington and Tim Ream when the Guinea forward was penalised for a high foot in the box in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
However, Aluko’s spot kick came back off the post as Fulham, who had earlier had a penalty from Tom Cairney saved by Alex Smithies, fell to their third defeat of the season. The former Hull City man could have found the net in the 34th minute with a delicious curling shot that flew just wide of Smithies’ goal, while Nedum Onuoha and Olamide Shodipo featured for the visitors. The win will come as a major relief for QPR coach Jimmy Floyd Haaselbanik who comes to the end of a testing week in which he was named as part of the Telegraph’s ongoing corruption sting. He had the impressive Smithies to thank for a first win at Craven Cottage since 1980 and three points that take QPR provisionally up to 12th on 15 points, while Fulham are in 13th on 14.
