Official: Barcelona boss resigns after disagreements with board of directors

4 months ago  Raphael   Sport News

One of Barcelona bosses have decided to part ways with the Catalans after disagreement with the club's hierarchy. Vice-president Jordi Mestre has tender his resignation letter as he steps down from his position on the Blaugrana's board.
Mestre left his post due to disagreements with the Board of Directors, which is headed by president Josep Maria Bartomeu, particularly with regard to the club's direction moving forward in a sporting sense.
Mundo Deportivo were the first to announce this news and they also were the ones who noted the disagreements. At first, it appeared as though his resignation was due to his recent appointment as president of the Gremio de Hoteleros, but this reason has since been squashed.
Mestre had held the position of sporting vice-president since 2014, following Bartomeu's rise to president after the dismissal of Sandro Rosell.
However, his presence on the board has dates back to 2010, when he was named responsible for football training, Barcelona B and the women's side. His resignation is likely to cause an earthquake in Bartomeu's board as he was one of the biggest influences on the directorate, someone the current president had the utmost confidence in.
What his departure makes clear is that there is a clear division as to how things should be done on a sporting level.
Jordi Mestre's resignation from the Barcelona board is an evidence that there is division at the club and it centres on general manager Pep Segura. There are quite a few directors who blame Segura for poor results and who aren't happy with his transfer policy and the loss of importance that La Masia has suffered under his watch.
Because of this, there are several directors who'd like to see him fired or at least to have his responsibilities reduced. Mestre was a defender of Segura, but he was in the minority and up against others such as Silvio Elias, Javier Bordas and Xavier Vilajoana.
As such, Mestre preferred to step aside before any decision on Segura was taken. Now Segura himself is considering resigning as he knows he doesn't have sufficient support in the Camp Nou offices. If he does leave then Bordas and Vilajoana would both be leading candidates to replace him, while president Josep Maria Bartomeu could even take over Segura's responsibilities in addition to his own.
There are other reasons for the rift in the boardroom, as there is a great split in opinion when it comes to the potential signings of Antoine Griezmann and Neymar. Many are upset with Griezmann for rejecting the club last year and for his 'Decision' video, while many are similarly annoyed by the way in which Neymar left the club in 2017.
As such, there is a lot of debate and a lot of division right now in the Barcelona boardroom.
