Arsenal Midfielder Mesut Ozil has paid tribute to a young Arsenal fan who died following a long battle with cancer this week. The German met 12-year-old Charlie Middleton on several occasions, inviting him as his guest to the 2017 FA Cup final, and was left devastated following the news on Wednesday.
'Such sad news to hear that my friend and huge Arsenal supporter Charlie has passed away after his long battle with cancer,' he wrote on Instagram.
'Rest in peace! We will miss you so much, Charlie '
Ozil posted three pictures alongside the young fan on social media, who twice battled cancer, suffering from tumours on his brain and spine.
After an initial battle which he had seemed to overcome, Charlie and his family were dealt a cruel blow in April 2017 when they learned the tumours had returned.
Then aged 11, the huge Gunners fan was forced to undergo surgery and regular chemotherapy, but Ozil was there to lend a hand.
Giving some solace to the youngster amid his battle, Ozil invited him to the Emirates on a number of occasions to watch his heroes play.
Most notably, he was seen at the FA Cup final in 2017, watching Ozil and Co beat Chelsea 2-1 to lift the trophy.
While Charlie underwent his treatment, the founder of My Shining Star said of Ozil's kind gesture: 'Charlie has been invited to every home game and to Ozil's box and he will meet the players before the game.'
