Another sad news for Manchester United fans after the sack of Jose Mourinho is that their number one target to replace him, Mauricio Pochettino shrugged off the idea of a summer move to Old Trafford and sent his best wishes to his friend Jose Mourinho. United are set to make an interim appointment to replace Mourinho as they search for a long-term successor. The Tottenham manager is expected to be a top target because his work is greatly admired at Old Trafford even Gary Neville wanted him as the replacement at the Red Devils dugout but he promised his focus was trained purely on a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Arsenal.
'I want to send best wishes to him,' said Pochettino, when asked about Mourinho's sacking. 'I feel so sorry. You know I have good relationship with him. We are good friends. It's sad news. 'Then, it's not my business what happens at another club. I want to send my best wishes to Jose.'
Pochettino, who arrived at Spurs from Southampton in 2014, is under contract in North London until 2023, having signed a new £8.5million-a-year deal in May.
'In nearly five years there have been a lot of rumours about my position as manager of Tottenham,' said the Argentine. 'I cannot answer this type of question. These rumours happen in football. 'I respect everyone's opinion, when people praise me, when they are angry with me, when they say different things. I accept the positive and the negative. 'We know rumours happen. It's not my business what happens at another club. I'm so focused to deliver our best job at this club. 'We have ahead very busy fixtures. Another derby, which is so important, in the quarter final of the cup. All the people will understand we are focused.'
In May 2016, Pochettino was spotted meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson when Manchester United were about to switch managers from Louis van Gaal to Mourinho.
'Sir Alex was and is and always will be an inspiration,' said the Spurs boss. 'To have the possibility to meet him was amazing. It was fantastic to share a moment, and it gave us a massive belief and confirmed that in the way we work that all is possible. 'He won his first title with Man United, I think, in his seventh year.
