Puyol names the only defender better than him

Barcelona legend, Carles Puyol was considered as one of the best defenders in the world at during his days as a professional footballers but the former Spanish international believes there's another player who is far better than him.
During an appearance as part of Heineken's UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour, the legendary utility defender sat down with top Spanish media outlet, MARCA to share his thoughts on his former club and a number of different issues.
Puyol now he believes that his former teammate at Barcelona Gerard Pique is better than him and he also went on to reveal why the former Manchester United defender is the best top central defender in the game.
Puyol has explained what makes Pique so great, while also discussing football's other top centre-backs. In his explanation, he also picked Pique above Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos who most football fans considered as the best defender in the game currently.
Also witht the emergence of Matthijs de Ligt and his fellow countryman Virgil van Dijk, Puyol still believed that Pique i sthe best defender in the world when the interviewer asked him Who is the best central defender in the world? "Gerard Pique, without a doubt." Puyol answered.
"What about between Ramos and Pique?" "Gerard Pique."
When the big question came about if Gerard Pique was better than him he responded by saying:  "Yes, he's the best central defender in the world. We're different. He is key to Barcelona in everything he contributes, in his leadership. He's a phenomenon and a great friend."
He was also asked the reason he decided not to play until 40, but he eventually retired before that age.
"When I couldn't train. The last two years were very complicated with knee surgeries. Everyone knows my way of playing and understands that in sport you have to give 100 percent. When you can't give that, you have to step aside."
He also jump on the question of one of the best games in the Barcelona shirt after he marked out Luis Figo who had left the club to join their rivals Real Madrid.
"Yes, I had been on the team for a year and it was important for the fans. He had gone to our biggest rival and it was a very tense match. I remember the atmosphere, I had to mark him across the pitch and many times the referee whistled and I just carried on running. We didn't listen to anything."
Was his move to Real Madrid a betrayal? "These are football matters, but when one of the captains leaves to go to your biggest rival, it always hurts."
