Real Madrid, Chelsea star miss out on Enrique's Spain squad

2 weeks ago  Raphael   Sport News

Luis Enrique announced that his next Spain squad would include some surprises  one month ago, and he is a man of his word as the former Barcelona coach has made eight changes, leaving out the likes of  Chelsea star left fullback Marcos Alonso, Real Madrid star Nacho Fernandez and Borussia Dortmund forward Paco Alcacer and calling up Barcelona left fullback Jordi Alba. The latter is in fine form for Los Cules and, having been left out of the previous two squads, Luis Enrique has now opened the door and allowed him to return.
The other new faces are Espanyol centre-back Mario Hermoso, Villarreal's Pablo Fornals (whose last appearance for La Roja came in 2016) and the biggest surprise, Celta Vigo's Brais Mendez, another young midfielder who, like Fornals, is promoted from the Under-21 side. Isco and Sergi Roberto return after their respective injuries, as do Diego Llorente and Inigo Martinez.
Luis Enrique's 24-man list is somewhat revolutionary, considering he has changed a third of it and included players from 14 different teams with five from the Premier League and one from Italy. Despite impressive performances for their clubs, Pablo Sarabia, Sergio Canales and Borja Iglesias all miss out.
Marcos Alonso, Nacho, Raul Albiol, Marc Bartra, Paco Alcacer and the injured Koke and Thiago have all failed to make the cut on this occasion. The omissions of Alcacer who scored three goals against Wales and England, and Nacho, who has been a regular in recent years, are particularly surprising.
Full 24-man Spain squad.
Goalkeepers: De Gea, Kepa and Pau López.
Defenders: Jonny Otto, Azpilicueta, Diego Llorente, Ramos, Mario Hermoso, Íñigo Martínez, Gayá and Jordi Alba.
Midfielders: Busquets, Fornals, Brais, Sergi Roberto, Saúl, Ceballos, Rodri.
Forwards: Suso, Rodrigo, Iago Aspas, Morata, Isco and Asensio.
