Real Madrid star Gareth Bale was the big favourite to receive the Puskas Award for the best goal of last season due to the athleticism of his overhead kick in the Champions League final against Liverpool as the Los Blancos won 3-1, the importance of his strike and the technique.
It was expected that the Welshman would claim the prize or if he did miss out then it would be to his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo's similar effort against Juventus but instead it went to Mohamed Salah whose ability to pick up online support is brutal. Now Bale admits that he was surprised he didn't win.
"Yes I was not expecting that to be honest, it appears to have devalued the importance of the award although Salah's was a great goal," he said.
"(Mine) should have won the Puskas Award, I have to say it was the best."
