According to Mirror, David Luiz is ready to sign a contract extension at Chelsea , according to reports in his native Brazil. The defender’s current deal expires at the end of the season, and Goal Brazil reports he has agreed a new contract through until 2020. But the issue with the contract renewal is that Chelsea continue to impose a strict policy of only offering one-year contracts to players in their thirties, meaning Luiz, 31, won’t be able to bag a longer term deal at Stamford Bridge.
Cesc Fabregas, who is also 31, has already left Chelsea this month to sign a long-term contract at Monaco. Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri last month spoke of his desire for the club to change its contract policy so that both Fabregas and Luiz would stay. But the Blues hierarchy are showing no signs of relaxing their attitude to renewals.
Luiz rejoined Chelsea in 2016 after a two-year stint at Paris St-Germain, having previously played for the Blues between 2011 and 2014. He scored the winning penalty on Thursday as Chelsea beat Spurs in a shootout to book their place in the Carabao Cup final. It has led to speculation Luiz might leave the club - he is now able to speak to foreign clubs as his current contract has less than six months to run.
