Rohr gets another major boost in his AFCON 2019 preparation plans

9 months ago  Raphael   Sport News

Nigeria manager Gernot Rohr has been handed a huge injury boost ahead of the announcement of his squad list for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles and high profile friendly with Egypt. Bursaspor right back Abdullahi Shehu returned to action on Saturday, his first game after suffering a thigh muscle rupture which kept him on the sidelines for more than three months. He suffered the injury while on international duty in an AFCON qualifier against Libya on October 13 and had to make way for Ola Aina after nineteen minutes. The 25-year-old came on in the 80th minute as Bursaspor shared the spoils with a 1-1 draw against Kayserispor.
Like it or not, Shehu has been the Super Eagles first choice right back since the appointment of Rohr as coach but did not figure in their last three games of 2018 because of injury. Benfica's Tyronne Ebuehi and Al-Nassr's Ahmed Musa are still recovering from injuries.
In rcent interview, Rohr has said that he's monitoring the progress of recovering injured Super Eagles stars Ahmed Musa and Tyronne Ebuehi ahead of the international matches against Seychelles and Egypt in March. While Benfica's Ebuehi has not kicked a ball in a competitive game this season after suffering a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee which required surgery, the Al-Nassr striker has not featured in his team's last two matches due to injury. Quizzed about his programme ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, Rohr told reporters, including Premium Times.
''We are still watching the players. We have a lot of work to do also with our systems in Europe to see the games -they didn’t stop in England – and then start it early in other countries. 'Even though it is cold now, they are still playing. So yes, it is a moment to monitor our players to see if they are fit and of course have some news also from our injured players like Tyronne who is playing but he can’t start in the training again. ''Also Ahmed Musa has an injury at the moment. We are following what they are doing.''
However, Spanish Segunda División club Deportivo de La Coruna are working on recalling Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho from his loan spell at Elche. The future of Uzoho has been up in the air after Elche signed édgar Badía from Reus in the January transfer window. Since the arrival of the ex-Spain U19 international, the Nigeria netminder has yet to feature for Elche in three straight matches and to make matters worse, he was omitted from the 18 against Granada (January 21) and CD Numancia (January 26).
If Uzoho's loan deal at Elche is scrapped, he is expected to be loaned out to another club for the remainder of the 2018-2019 season. The 20-year-old conceded five goals in his last three appearances for Elche before he was frozen out by manager Pacheta. Uzoho joined Deportivo de La Coruna in January 2017 from Aspire Academy.
Rohr is expected to announce his roster for the Super Eagles first two matches this calendar year as from the next three weeks.
