Super Eagles stars Kenneth Omeruo and Samuel Chukwueze's good form in the Spanish La Liga has delighted the National team coach Gernot Rohr. The Chelsea loanee is enjoying some of the best form of his life and was recently ranked the best Nigerian player in the big five leagues in Europe (Premier League, Serie A, La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1) for the month of December. With 5 goals in 18 games across all competitions, no Nigerian player in Europe's top five leagues has scored more goals than Chukwueze this season.
''Chukwueze and Omeruo are already a part of the team. When I invited Chukwueze last time, a lot of people were surprised but I know that he has qualities and he's showing them now,'' said Gernot Rohr. ''Omeruo is doing well playing a three-man defense. We played also like that in Johannesburg against South Africa with Omeruo. ''These players are in a very good league in Spain, we have also Simon Moses who is coming back. He played a good match against Barcelona.''
On the flip side, Rohr has expressed concern over the inactivity of Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, who was not involved in the last two games contested by Elche in La Liga 2.
''We have a little problem with our goalkeeper Uzoho because his club bought another goalkeeper (Edgar Badia). ''I would like to see him play and not being number two in Spanish second league, that's why he is working on going to loan to another club in Europe to play regularly. The level in Spain is high,'' Rohr added.
Rohr also suggested that Africa Cup of Nations leading marksman Odion Ighalo is negotiating with Premier League and Turkish Super Lig teams with a view to a transfer in the January transfer window. We understand that Fenerbahce and Galatasaray have held talks with representatives of the Changchun Yatai striker and at least three Premier League teams are keen on signing him.
''The Chinese League is on winter break, he still has a contract with his club so he cannot play,'' said Gernot Rohr. ''He also wants to come back to Europe and he's trying at the moment to negotiate a new contract in England or Turkey. 'We'll be watching also. I hope he can play regularly in a good club like for all other players, they have to be fit, play well and regularly with their clubs. ''He did so well with the national team in the last games. We really hope he will come back very soon.''
Ighalo scored 27 goals for club and country, including six in the 2019 AFCON qualifiers, in competitive matches in 2018. Nigeria will face Seychelles (AFCON qualifier) and Egypt (friendly) in international matches in March 2019.
