Ronaldo Nazario, who formerly played for Barcelona and Real Madrid, believes that too much blame is put on the likes of Ernesto Valverde and Philippe Coutinho when the Blaugrana fail, rather than the team sharing the blame.
The Blaugrana's 4-0 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield saw the Catalans crash out of the Champions League in embarrassing fashion for the second year in a row, and the former Brazil striker is adamant that the other players deserve respect.
"Barcelona have a great team, and they have the best player in the world in Messi," Ronaldo said at an event for Santander Bank. "The other day I heard that when they lose, it's because of Valverde, Coutinho... but not Messi.
"And when they win, Barcelona win because of Messi. "It's a tremendous lack of respect to all the players and the coaching staff."
Ronaldo, who is now a majority shareholder in Real Valladolid, was not surprised to see Liverpool come out victorious on Tuesday night after seeing their intensity on the pitch.
"When a team are a lot more motivated, with an intensity that is noticeably greater than that of their opponents, [the comeback] can happen," added Ronaldo.
"Liverpool's intensity was not a surprise for Barcelona, but they lacked a bit of luck. "The first leg was a great match by Barcelona, with an exceptional performance by Messi, but in the return fixture, Liverpool overwhelmed them with intensity, desire and a clinical nature."
