Spain defeated Iran 1-0 in a thrilling Group B second game encounter, as Iran gave spain a run for their money with a dogged performance.
In a post interview granted after the match by the La Furia Roja captain Sergio Ramos, he took the opportunity to take aim at Argentina legend Diego Maradona who said earlier this week that the Real Madrid defender was not as good as his Atletico Madrid rival Diego Godin.
In Ramos’ response, he made it clear that is El Clasico rival Lionel Messi who is also an Argentine player is superior to the 57-year-old. “In Argentina they know that Maradona is light years away from the best Argentine player in history which, for me, is Lionel Messi,” Ramos told Marca.
Maradona captained La Albiceleste to the World Cup title in Mexico 1986, where he was far and away the best player. He also led them to the final four years later in Italy but lost to Germany.
Sergio Ramos also praised Spain for their never-say-die attitude in securing all maximum three points over Iran courtesy of Diego Costa solitary strike.
“They [Iran] went out to waste time, whereas we like to win in a different way,” he explained. “We leave happy. We’ve taken another step forward and now we have to try to top our group, it’s our objective. “I still think we can improve in all aspects.”
Spain play their final group game against Morocco at Kaliningrad Stadium on Tuesday.
