Miguel Angel Gil Marin's insistence on Tuesday that Diego Simeone will remain at Atletico Madrid during 2017/18 means that the coach will then oversee his seventh season with the club.
He would achieve a milestone that would equal the record set by Ricardo Zamora on the bench at the club between 1939 and 1946.
At present, Simeone is the longest serving LaLiga coach of this century, having took over the side in January 2011.
The Argentine tactician is celebrating his sixth season at the Estadio Vicente Calderon, during which he has taken charge of 285 games and won five trophies: La Liga, the Copa del Rey, Europa League, Supercopa de Espana and the European Super Cup.
In addition, he has led the side to two Champions League finals where they were twice beaten by city rivals Real Madrid.
Besides Zamora, the last coach in Spain to achieve seven successive seasons with the same team was Javier Irureta, who was with Deportivo between 1998/99 and 2004/05.
During his time in charge at the Estadio Riazor, Depor won every major Spanish domestic honour and also reached the Champions League semi-final in 2003/04.
The longest serving coach in the league's history is Real Madrid's Miguel Munoz, who was with the club for 15 seasons.
He is followed by eight in succession for Johan Cruyff (Barcelona), Lorenzo Serra Ferrer (Mallorca), Pedro Mari Zabalza (Osasuna), Arsenio Iglesias (Deportivo), Juan Urquizu (Athletic) and Bernardino Perez (Sabadell).
