SuperSport United overcame Sudan opponents Al-Ahly Shendy 4-0 in Sunday evening's CAF Confederation Cup first-round rematch to advance to the next round. Needing to overcome a 3-2 deficit from the first leg, SuperSport United found the goals they needed within the first 45 minutes, as Tefu Mashamaite and an own goal gave Matsatsantsa a 2-0 half-time lead, before Kingston Nkhatha and substitue Aubrey Modiba's second-half strikes put the game to bed. After an early chance for Shendy in the opening minutes, SuperSport managed to compose themselves and create chances in front of goal, Mashamaite and Nkhatha with two early opportunities that were denied.
Reneilwe Letsholonyane was on the receiving end of a harsh challenge, and had to be replaced by Teboho Mokoena just after the half-hour mark. SuperSport’s pressure eventually paid off four minutes before the break as Mashamaite popped up to net his first goal for the Pretoria club, before Abaker’s own goal doubled the advantage for the hosts.
Just three minutes into the second stanza and SuperSport had their third, Nkhatha registering his name on the scoresheet after latching onto a neat pass by Mokoena. The Zimbabwean would later have to be substituted after picking up a knock, and was replaced by Modiba. Modiba took his opportunity with both hands, blasting the ball home from a Jeremy Brockie assist to put daylight between the hosts and their Sudanese rivals. The 4-0 result sees Stuart Baxter’s chargers advance 6-3 on aggregate to prolong their 2017 continental campaign. Platinum Stars yesterday advanced in the competition with a 3-2 aggregate win over Ugandan outfit Vipers SC.
