Tabarez: I expect more from Suarez

Uruguay started their Russia 2018 world cup campaign on a winning note, winning 1-0 against Egypt with Jose Gimenez scoring a late header to secure all three points.

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez expects his talismán Luis Suarez to give a good showing in their next match after a lacklustre performance against Egypt in which he lost so many glorious chances.

"He has so much potential, that's why we are very relaxed," Tabarez said of Suarez at a news conference in Rostov on Tuesday.

The coach also shared his view on the Barcelona striker who will earn his 100th cap in the match against Saudi Arabia.

"100 - What a meaningful number. Suarez has scored so many goals and had so many assists for Uruguay. He is a fantastic player," Tabarez said.

Suarez himself was fully aware of the way he played against Egypt and said he wasn’t himself in that particular encounter.

"I know what I can give the team. I clearly did not do that," Suarez said.

Suarez has scored 51 goals in his 99 caps, placing him seventh in the list of South American goal scorers, behind Pele (77), Romario (66), Lionel Messi (64), Ronaldo (62), Gabriel Batistuta (54) and Neymar (53).

Oscar Tabarez was quick to motivate his player, by giving references to all other great players who also do have poor game.

"As long as he doesn't stop trying, we don't mind a poor game. I have seen matches from (Lionel) Messi, Pele or (Diego) Maradona in which they didn't play up to their expectations. Such things happen," the 71-year-old coach said.
