The two players behind Real Madrid Champions League success

2 days from now  Raphael   Sport News

Seven years have passed since Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane started together in the Champions League. They first did so on November 22, 2011, in a 6-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, when the Spaniard was 25 and the Frenchman just 18. A legendary defensive partnership was born that day.
Against Roma on Tuesday night, just over seven years later, they played together in their 35th Champions League match and earned their 26th win, to go with eight draws and just one defeat - the 2-1 semi-final second leg against Atletico Madrid in 2017.
Over those 35 appearances together, just 28 goals have been conceded. There have been some disappointing European nights over the past seven years, but the defeats against Dortmund, Juventus, Tottenham, Wolfsburg, Galatasaray, Schalke or Shakhtar took place with a different starting centre-back pairing than Ramos-Varane.
This year, they've both played together in the two wins over Roma to earn two clean sheets and to add to their legend. They're reaching the heights of some of the other legendary centre-back pairings of recent history, like Manolo Sanchis and Fernando Hierro, Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci, or Diego Godin and Miranda.
