Barcelona have left out youngsters Ansu Fati and Riqui Puig from their main squad list for the 2019/20 Champions League season. One of the revelations for Barcelona so far this season is the emergence of Fati. After making his debut for the first team against Real Betis, he went on to score the equaliser against Osasuna.
Barcelona A squad include all the first-team players alongside youngsters like Hiroki Abe, Ronald Araujo, and Ferran Sarsanedas. The A squad can have a maximum of 25 players, of which two must be goalkeepers.
Barcelona released an official statement on their website to explain the exclusion of Fati, Puig and how they can be involved in the team.
"FC Barcelona have registered their squad for the 2019/20 Champions League. The entire first team squad plus Hiroki Abe, Ronaldo Araujo and Ferran Sarsanedas from Barça B are included in the A list maximum of 25 players, of which at least two must be goalkeepers. The three B team players will wear the numbers 37 (Abe), 33 (Araujo) and 34 (Sarsanedes) should they figure in the competition," the club stated.
"Why are Abe, Araujo and Sarsanedas included in the A list and not the B list? In the case of Abe and Araujo, it is because they have spent less than three years within the Barça youth system. As for Sarsenedas, he was born in 1997 meaning he is too old to be included in the B list.
"According to UEFA regulations, the B list of players can be sent until midnight of the eve of the Champions League fixture in question. The players must be under the age of 21 and have spent at least three years in the youth system at the club so the likes of Riqui Puig, Abel Ruiz or Iñaki Pérez would all be available to be registered for the B list for a Champions League fixture."
