VAR awards penalty to Mainz with players already in the dressing room

With the first half already over and the players in the dressing room, VAR awarded a penalty to Mainz against Freiburg, during their Bundesliga match on Monday night.

The game, crucial in the fight against relegation, was 0-0 when the referee whistled for the end of the first half.

Freiburg players had left the field, however, referee Guido Winkmann was alerted by his assistant Bibiana Steinhaus, in charge of VAR, that defender Oliver Kempf had touched the ball with his hand inside the area.

After viewing the controversial play, which occurred after a cross by Daniel Brosinski, Winkmann awarded the penalty to Mainz and the Freiburg players had to come out onto the pitch again.

Shortly after, Pablo di Blasis easily converted the penalty, but the whole incident took almost eight minutes.

"We were already in the dressing room, but we have to accept it," said Jochen Seier. "I think it's according to the rules, but it's getting weirder."
